Air Pollution

By Kitara from the Press Gang

Air pollution is caused by solid and liquid particles and certain gasses that are floating in the air. These particles and gasses can come from car and truck exhaust, factories, dust, pollen, mold spores, volcanoes and wildfires. And there isn’t just one type of pollution there is also light pollution, noise pollution, plastic pollution, radioactive contamination, thermal pollution, visual pollution, and water pollution.

Air pollution. You see it everywhere. From the city, to even in your own backyard. Did you know that air pollution can damage crops and trees in a variety of ways? It damages living tissue in the plant and weakens it, making it vulnerable to insects and diseases. It can reduce growth and survivability of tree seedlings, and increase plant susceptibility to disease, pests and other environmental stresses.

Although we can all help a little to stop this madness by…

  • Reducing the number of trips you take in your car. To help that you could walk to places within reasonable distance to reduce petrol while driving or use public transport.
  • Avoid using gas-powered lawn mowers and garden equipment and much more.
  • Save energy e.g. turning off lights, having shorter showers and turning off things that you might have plugged into the wall.
  • Recycling and composting.

This problem was created by the human species and it is now affecting not only us but animals and plants too. If we all do a couple of small things, which I am sure we can all do, we could make a BIG difference to what may seem like a problem that is impossible to solve.
